Water lilies are wonderful subjects but the challenge in shooting them is that they generally remain closed unless the sun is striking them directly, not the most complementary light for floral images. With this shot the sun was to the right and rear of the bloom, producing the central glow. This was taken with a Canon S2 IS, my first digital camera. Digital capture more than anything has contributed to my growth as a flora photographer, allowing experimentation and immediate feedback. This was my first digital floral image selected as an Editor's Pick.
